Borough Huts Campground sits on Fyans Creek in Grampians (Gariwerd) National Park, about 10 km south of Halls Gap on a sealed road. It's the practical alternative to the busier Halls Gap and Lake Bellfield campgrounds — quieter, mostly bushland, and closer to the southern Grampians walks. The trade-off: fewer facilities. There are no flush toilets, no showers, and no drinking water on site. You bring everything you need.
Getting there#
Location: approximately 10 km south of Halls Gap, along the Grampians Road. The drive is fully sealed.
- From Halls Gap: about 10 km south (10–15 minutes). The most common approach.
- From Stawell: about 35 km via Halls Gap (40 minutes).
- From Ararat: about 50 km via the Ararat–Halls Gap Road (1 hour).
- From Melbourne CBD: about 260 km, 3 hours via the Western Freeway (M8) to Ararat, then north to Halls Gap and south on Grampians Road.
The access road is sealed all the way, so caravans, camper trailers, and motorhomes are fine. Mobile reception is variable in the southern Grampians — patchy on Telstra, more limited on Optus.

Open in Google MapsSites and facilities#
Around 35 unpowered sites, with a 6-person cap per site. Check-in is 2pm, check-out is 11am. Bookings open up to 12 months in advance through Parks Victoria, and all sites must be booked online — there are no walk-ins year-round.
On site:
- Non-flushing toilets (drop toilets)
- Picnic tables
- Designated fireplaces (campfires permitted in those, subject to current Victorian fire restrictions)
- Fyans Creek runs alongside the campground
Bring with you:
- Drinking water and cooking water — Fyans Creek runs through the site but the water is not potable without treatment, and the creek can run dry in summer
- Firewood — collecting in the park is prohibited
- Fuel stove (essential during fire-restriction days, when wood fires are banned)
- Insect repellent for the warmer months
Dogs are not permitted. The campground sits inside the national park.
Nearest town and supplies#
Halls Gap (10 km, ~15 minutes) is the supply town for this part of the Grampians. It has:
- A small supermarket and an IGA
- Multiple cafes and pubs
- Fuel
- Outdoor gear shops
- A visitor information centre with current track and road conditions
For a bigger shop, Stawell (35 km, ~40 minutes north) has full supermarkets and chain stores. Ararat (50 km, ~1 hour south) is similar.
The right plan: do a real shop in Stawell or Ararat on the way in, then top up anything missing in Halls Gap. Halls Gap is close enough that a forgotten-item run mid-trip is easy.
What to do at Borough Huts#
- Lake Bellfield is right next door. Canoe, kayak, or fish (you'll need a Victorian fishing licence). It's the closest large body of water and a good cool-down spot in summer.
- Mount Rosea hiking trail — a moderate-to-hard 12 km loop with one of the best Grampians views, looking over the Serra Range. The trailhead is a short drive from the campground.
- Grampians Peaks Trail — Borough Huts is a sensible base for sections of the multi-day Peaks Trail. Several day-walk segments leave from camp or nearby trailheads.
- The Pinnacle and Sundial Carpark walks — the famous Grampians lookouts, about 15 minutes' drive north past Halls Gap.
- Boroka Lookout — quick drive for sunset views.
- Wildlife — kangaroos and emus are common around the campground at dawn and dusk; powerful owls are heard at night.
Best time to visit#
- Spring (September–November) is the showstopper season — wildflowers across the heath, comfortable walking weather, all the falls running. Book early, especially for school holidays.
- Autumn (March–May) is mild and quiet. Good walking, good fishing, low crowds.
- Winter (June–August) is cold (overnight 1–5°C) and wet, but campfire-friendly and dramatic. Some upper walks may close for ice.
- Summer (December–February) is hot, fire-restricted, and busy with school holidays. Total Fire Bans are common, which removes the campfire option that draws many people here.
Check the Grampians local closures page before any visit — fire and weather closures are part of life here.
Camping fees#
Borough Huts is included in the Victorian Government's half-price camping subsidy. Per-site rates vary peak/shoulder/off-peak; expect approximately $34–$38 per site per night plus the $7 Parks Victoria booking fee. No separate vehicle entry fee applies to the Grampians.
