Best for

horse-riding

Glen Rock is a horse-and-trail-friendly bush camp on the western edge of Main Range Conservation Park in southern Queensland — the kind of QPWS spot where you can have a wood barbecue, take a cold shower, ride out from camp on the trails, and not see a phone signal for two days. The Scenic Rim sits to the south, the Great Dividing Range runs along the eastern boundary, and the campground is surprisingly well-equipped for somewhere this low-key.

Getting there#

Location: Western edge of Main Range Conservation Park, accessed via Glen Rock Road from the Cunningham Highway.

  • From Toowoomba (~80 km, ~1 hour 15 minutes): the standard approach for the Darling Downs side.
  • From Warwick (~50 km, ~50 minutes): via Cunningham Highway and Glen Rock Road.
  • From Brisbane CBD (~150 km, 2 hours): via the Cunningham Highway through Aratula and Maryvale.
  • From Goomburra Forest Reserve (~30 km, 45 minutes): if you're combining Main Range trips.

The road in is 2WD-accessible in dry conditions, with the final stretch on Glen Rock Road being unsealed gravel. After heavy rain, it can deteriorate. Caravans, camper trailers, and motorhomes manage in dry weather. Mobile reception is essentially non-existent inside the park — download offline maps before driving in.

Sites and facilities#

Glen Rock is a single open camping area rather than discrete numbered sites — book through QPWS for a per-person allocation. Suits tents, camper trailers, caravans, and campervans. Check-in is 2pm, check-out is 11am.

On site (notably more than most QLD bush camps):

  • Non-flush toilets
  • Cold showers — rare for a state-park bush camp, and welcome after a horse or 4WD day
  • Wood barbecues (BYO firewood)
  • Designated fireplaces — campfires are permitted, conditions apply (typically banned on Total Fire Ban days)
  • Wheelchair access (may require assistance)
  • Picnic tables

Bring with you:

  • Drinking water and cooking water — the on-site water source (if any) is not reliably potable
  • Firewood (collecting is prohibited)
  • Fuel stove for fire-restriction days
  • Cold-weather sleeping gear in winter (Main Range sits at altitude; nights drop to single digits or below)
  • Anything for the horse: feed, lead, tether

Nearest town and supplies#

The closest service points:

  • Aratula (~25 km, ~30 minutes east on Cunningham Highway) — small village with a general store, pub, and fuel.
  • Warwick (~50 km, ~50 minutes south) — proper supply town with a Coles, multiple service stations, hospital, hardware. The right place for a real shop.
  • Toowoomba (~80 km, ~1 hour north) — the major regional centre, full chain supermarkets, hospital, all services.

The pragmatic plan: shop in Warwick or Toowoomba on the way through, top up at Aratula if you need a forgotten item. Don't expect to find anything closer than Aratula.

What to do at Glen Rock#

  • Horse riding — Glen Rock is one of the better organised QLD horse-riding camps, with established trails and tether-friendly layout. Multiple loops in the surrounding state forest.
  • Mountain biking and bicycle access — the same trail network suits mountain bikers; gradients vary from gentle valley loops to steep range climbs.
  • Bushwalking — walks lead from the campground into the Main Range, with day options ranging from short loops to the more committed Scenic Rim sections.
  • Wildlife — wallabies, swamp wallabies, the occasional koala, abundant birdlife (including the local race of glossy black-cockatoo).
  • Stargazing — minimal light pollution; very good clear nights.

Best time to visit#

Glen Rock sits at altitude on the western flank of the Great Dividing Range, so the climate runs cooler than coastal Queensland:

  • Autumn (March–May) is the local sweet spot — mild days (20–25°C), cool nights, low rainfall, perfect riding conditions.
  • Winter (June–August) is genuinely cold — frosty nights (below 5°C), crisp dry days. Great for fires and walks; pack a four-season sleeping bag.
  • Spring (September–November) is variable; storms ramp up from October.
  • Summer (December–February) is hot and storm-prone; tracks can flood and Total Fire Bans are common.

Easter, school holidays, and warm-weather long weekends book ahead.
